Three Checks to Make Before Every FPL Deadline
The best FPL deadline decisions are often the least dramatic ones. Before chasing a late transfer or changing captain on instinct, run through these three checks. The routine takes only a few minutes and catches many of the avoidable mistakes that cost points.
1. Confirm player availability
Start with the players already in your squad. Check injury updates, suspension status and likely minutes, paying particular attention to anyone returning from a knock or competing for a place. A transfer is easier to judge once you know whether your current starter is genuinely at risk.
If the information is uncertain, decide how much risk your bench can absorb. A strong first substitute can make holding a doubtful player reasonable; a thin bench may make the same situation worth addressing.
2. Recheck the fixture context
Look beyond the next opponent. Compare the next few fixtures, home and away context, expected role and the route to points. For attackers, consider involvement and minutes as well as the fixture label. For defenders, weigh clean-sheet potential against attacking threat and rotation risk.
This helps separate a useful long-term move from a one-week punt. It also reduces the temptation to sell a good asset immediately before their schedule improves.
3. Confirm captaincy and bench order
Treat captaincy as a separate decision from transfers. Check your captain and vice-captain, then make sure the vice-captain is a secure starter. Finally, order the bench by expected points rather than player price or the order in which players were added to the squad.
A two-minute deadline routine
- Open the latest availability information and identify genuine doubts.
- Review your planned transfer against at least the next three fixtures.
- Lock captain, vice-captain and bench order, then save the team.
Once those checks are complete, stop tinkering unless meaningful new information arrives. A repeatable process will not guarantee every result, but it gives each decision a clear reason and makes it much easier to review your choices after the gameweek.
